President Joko Widodo Says Myanmar's Representation Should be Kept in the format Decided for the Past ASEAN Summits

INTERNATIONAL: The President of Indonesia, Joko Widodo, has reiterated to the ASEAN Chair, the Prime Minister of Cambodia Hun Sen that if there is no significant progress in the implementation of the five points of consensus, Myanmar's representation should be kept in the format decided for the past ASEAN summits. Which means the Myanmar seat is left open or has non-political representatives in attendance. However, he has stressed that Indonesia will work with Cambodia to push for ASEAN to move forward and find a solution to the Myanmar crisis.

In a press release on Friday, 21 January, 2022, on the telephone conversation between Cambodia Prime Minister Hun Sen and Indonesian President Joko Widodo, the two sides have discussed the issues on Myanmar, including the implementation of the five consensus. ASEAN's point of view on Myanmar and the Rohingya issue.

During the meeting, Cambodia’s premier has stated that in order to promote the implementation of the five points of consensus, the establishment of the ASEAN Troika mechanism consisting of Brunei (former chair), Cambodia (current chair) and Indonesia (future ASEAN chair) have agreed both the ASEAN Secretary-General to coordinate and monitor the implementation of this consensus and another mechanism is a consultation meeting to discuss the provision of humanitarian assistance and the provision of non-discriminatory vaccinations to the people of Myanmar.

In response, Indonesian President Joko Widodo has praised Cambodia Prime Minister's ASEAN leadership, signaling positive implementation of the five-point consensus, as well as the initiative to establish an ASEAN Troika mechanism to drive progress in implementing these five points of consensus.

The Press release quoted that: "The Indonesian President has underlined that without significant progress on the implementation of the 5-PC, Myanmar's representative should be kept in the format decided for the past ASEAN summits."

ASEAN's 5-PC for Myanmar are to call for an end to the violence, establish a multilateral dialogue, accept the coordination of ASEAN special envoys, provide humanitarian assistance and allow special envoys to visit Myanmar.

However, Joko Widodo has vowed to work with Cambodia to push ASEAN to move forward and find a solution to the Myanmar crisis.

After visiting Myanmar on January 7 and 8, 2022, paving the way for positive signs of the implementation of the five points consensus of the ASEAN for Myanmar, Prime Minister Hun Sen has decided to continue the work to the ASEAN Foreign Ministers. He said ASEAN has a lot of work to do in 2022, not just one Myanmar issue, and "ASEAN is not a hostage of Myanmar."

Myanmar has plunged into crisis after a military coup on February 1 overthrew Aung San Suu Kyi's government and replaced it with military rule led by General Min Aung Hlaing. Since the crisis, the Myanmar's ASEAN membership has been in question, while last year's ASEAN chair, Brunei Darussalam, did not invite Min Aung Hlaing to the ASEAN Summit.
